I recently checked the Codaa.org Discussion Board, went to several of the followup messages and was alarmed to find that EVERY SINGLE ONE of our legitimate postings has been infested with links posted by unscrupulous spammers leading to extreme pornography - solicitations to visit sites exhibiting extreme sexual content: rape, torture, pedophilia, bestiality - every possible variation one could find in a journal of clinical psychopathology.
The online vermin responsible for this have done their "work" very cleverly. They have infiltrated our Discussion Board in a very subtle and deliberate way - at first glance, it looks as if someone is genuinely responding to one of our legitimate postings. However, clicking on the link in the ersatz response immediately takes the user to a pornography site.
Removing each of these offensive messages ( and monitoring our site to see that nothing like this appears again ), is mind-numbingly tedious and extremely time-consuming -- time which I do not have.
On a personal level, it is also depressing for me to see that deviants, pornographers, and criminals can take the time to "visit" our discussion group. Yet with all of the critical issues, pressures, and inequality facing adjuncts today, hardly any adjuncts actually contribute to the discussion group with legitimate messages.
I have thought about alternatives, but none seem particularly workable. At some point, I could take all of our legitimate responses and paste them all into one file for a summary, but then nobody could respond. What about a password-protected Discussion Board ? It's true that a username/password system would keep out most of the slime. However, real adjuncts that have something worthwhile to say but want to remain anonymous, would have to e-mail me requesting the password. This would nullify the choice of anonymously posting messages without fear of administrative retribution.
For these reasons, I see no other choice but to pull this page off our site. It pains me to do this, because the ( legitimate ) discussion group replies have been thoughtful and germane responses to adjunct issues. However, I will not tolerate having our space overrun with unsolicited and unwelcome advertising for sites promoting offensive content. If any of you have suggestions for creating a discussion area that would be free of inappropriate postings, I'd appreciate a response.
Thank you,
