Dear Broken Back,
Before I taught the Computer Art classes, I was teaching Drawing,
so I understand your frustrations. Unless they've
changed policies, you should be able to access the
storage area for keeping items for still-life set-ups,
etc. However, if you have anything really valuable in your gear,
you might not want to keep it stored there - too much access.
Years ago, part-timers DID have a shared office, but it is now
occupied by a full-time instructor from another area. No doubt
about it, the lack of an office is another aspect of the adjunct
life that makes things as difficult for the student as it is for
the instructor. Those teaching in rooms on the east end of the IC building,
can always meet with students in IC 2070, but that's too far for
students and instructors to walk from the Arts Center. However, you do have
another option - the tenured painting instructor, Jennifer Hereth,
told me that she makes her office available for all part-time drawing /
painting instructors.
There is probably not a lot of room to store things, but at least you
have a private area to confer with students, instead of
trying to speak with students above the din in the hallway.
Contact her directly for more details. Hope this helps.
