I recently heard a very interesting program on NPR.
Scientists conducting an experiment discovered that
monkeys appear to understand the concept of "fairness"
at a personal level, and act accordingly if they
perceive that they are being treated unfairly.
Apparently, monkeys that perceived their fellow monkeys
were given bigger or better rewards for the same task
that they had just completed, stopped participating
in the experiment !
If even our primate friends can grasp the logic of
"pro rata" - equal compensation for equal work -
why is it that the folks who manage our institutions
seem to have such difficulty with this concept ?
