An Appeal From President Emerita, Vicki Root

The following was posted to our Discussion Board by our recent President, Vicki Root. One of our most important political allies, Senator Dan Cronin, has supported us in our efforts to overturn the miscarriage of justice called the Harper decision. We should support him also. Anyway, here is Vicki's message, followed by contact information for the legislators mentioned:

" I could probably address several specific people with different messages, but I am going to give a general call for ANYBODY/EVERYBODY out there browsing the site...

In October, COD hosted hearings by Sen. Cronin and two other state senators who are on the Education committee. They were here to hear from US, the adjunct faculty, about the bill that would begin to undo the Harper decision...or at least weaken its interpretation. To those who attended, I give a heartfelt thanks. We really opened their eyes.

Now it is time for us to standup and be counted and heard, not just by three senators, but by our neighbors and friends. Cronin is willing to push the bill's passage in the state Senate. We need to get it out of the Rules committee, and he is willing to push for that also.

Are we willing to help him? Are we willing to try and get voters to re-elect Cronin and other sympathetic senators? We are asking them to stand up and be counted for us; let us stand up and vote for them.

Contact Pate Phillips' office; it is in Addison or Bensenville or WoodDale. Tell him you want him to pass HB 1720 OUT of the Rules Committee and INTO the Education committee. Contact Cronin's campaign headquarters in Elmhurst; he has opposition in the March primary. Ask how YOU can help. If you live in his district, ask for a lawn sign. If you live on a road that leads from the eastern section of the COD district to COD, place a sign for Cronin along the way.

People keep asking, why don't FT faculty help? They do. They have given us unrivaled support for most of the past 2 years. But others can only help so much; we have to help ourselves, for without doing anything ourselves, why should others help us? "
