Urgent Message about IBHE Hearings / PT "Survey"

IBHE will report on the part-time faculty survey at the meeting on February 5 at DePaul University at the Lincoln Park campus. It will be held in the Student Center, Room 120 A. The street address is 2250 N. Sheffield ( near Fullerton ). For a complete agenda and for a full-text copy of the part-time report go to http://www.ibhe.org

We will be making a statement in relation to the report. We will express great concern and disappointment with the instrument used for the survey and with a number of points made in the report. ( Actually, most points! )

I will submit written testimony and will make a statement at the meeting. Please send any comments that you would like for me to consider in my statement as soon as possible.

Please attend the meeting and encourage others to attend. Parking on campus is difficult, so arrive early. We will distribute part-time buttons and hope to be highly visible at the meeting. We really need to have some people there otherwise IBHE can report to legislators that there seems to be little interest.

Thanks for your continued support. Our bill (HB 1720) related to part-time faculty organizing on community college campuses is in the Rules Committee in the Senate. We have efforts in place to move the bill this session. If the bill does not pass this spring, we will have to start over in the fall.

Now is the time for increased visibility and solidarity.

Thanks, Donna

Better Healthcare for America

As many of you know, our country lags far behind the rest of the industrialized world in terms of health care for its citizens. We have a high number of uninsured ( including, obviously, many adjuncts ) who have no access to the health system for coverage of preventive care, treatment or emergency needs.

Nate Holdren of the Campaign for Better Healthcare is looking for adjunct faculty who have stories of being uninsured for a committee at the UIC medical school on Jan 16 from 1:30 to 3:30. They hope to have live witnesses, but written testimony can also be submitted. If anyone is, or knows someone who might be, interested please contact Nate at 312. 913. 9449 or nholdren@cbhconline.org

Below are details in an e-mail just received from Nate:

Oleh --
The seminar is being held at UIC Medical School Clinical Sciences Building, 840 S. Wood, Room #931.

It's not too late. If you could post the information that would be excellent. Please post that we would like 1-3 people to come and give testimony. (Unfortunately UIC has not given permission for us to invite members of the public to attend, so we can't issue an open invitation.)

Anyone interested in being on the panel to give testimony should call me for more information at 312.913. 9449.

Also, when we had communicated earlier I had said we preferred in-person to written testimony. Since that time the student running the seminar has expressed interest in having written testimony as well, to be read or handed out to the attending students. Would you be interested in supplying written testimony? Actually now that I'm thinking of it, can you post on the website that people who can't attend are encouraged to submit written testimony?
(via e-mail by Tuesday 1/15 at 3pm, to nholdren@cbhconline.org)

P.S.    Witnesses can definitely submit testimony omitting their personal information and we won't give out personal or contact information to anyone. Our policy with testimony is to put the person in control of their own story. Only what they deem relevant and appropriate is shared publicly. If you could, can you add this to the webpost, that anonymity is fine.

Thanks very much for your help on this, Oleh.

In solidarity,
Nate Holdren

The Work Begins

The 122 members of the newly-formed union face various challenges. Among them:
  • Securing better pay and working conditions
  • Expanding eligibility for the 90% of COD adjuncts that remain disenfranchised
  • Maintaining contact with legislators to ensure passage of laws restoring the rights of adjuncts in Illinois

To this end, the union must work as a team - it cannot rely solely on its officers; everyone must do their part. More information can be found on the Union Page.

Hey !! We Won !!!

The consent election held on December 4th - 5th has resulted in a part-time faculty union ! The result are:
  • 78 adjuncts voted, out of 122 eligible ( 64% )
  • 66 people voted yes ( 85% = yes )
  • 12 people voted no ( 15% = no )
  • 6 people voted contested ballots, which were not counted

Thank You to Phone Bank Callers / Pollwatchers !

The process of preparing for the election, coordinating with the school and the IELRB, checking, double-checking, updating and in some cases, contesting the school's eligibility lists, informing eligible voters and monitoring the polls, has been a tremendous amount of work. • Vicki Root,
  • Margaret Hough,
  • Pat Hearn,

Campus Equity Week

October 28 - November 3

Observed nationwide in the US and Canada, Campus Equity Week aims to heighten awareness and spur action on the abuse of contingent academic labor. CODAA has been in contact with Joe Berry, local organizer for COCAL ( Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor ) regarding possible events in our area.

COCAL is planning events at all Chicago area colleges from Oct. 28th to Nov. 3rd, to coordinate with demonstrations across the country. CODAA is planning a social event with FT faculty to coincide with Campus Equity Week.

State Hearings at COD !! ( HB 1720 )

Speech ! Speech !

Here are the eloquent arguments set forth by full- and part-time faculty at the July 11th Board of Trustees meeting.

Thanks for Support at Board Meeting !

On Wednesday, July 11th, 7:00 PM at the SRC / Jack Turner Center, Room 2800 A & B, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees and President Murphy heard statements from full-time and part-time faculty in support of CODAA and unionization. Read more ...

Yes, It CAN Be Done !!!

Administrators and adjuncts at Logan Community College in downstate Carterville recently came to a collective bargaining agreement. Why can't our administration do the same with us ? Read more here...

Did We Overlook You ?

A number of adjuncts have contacted us regarding the mailing of the petition for election cards. Due to the urgency with which this needed to be done, we may have inadvertently missed a few people. We're sorry if you were one of these ! Rest assured, we want your vote. Due to current education labor statutes, votes are accepted from anyone employed this past Spring Quarter with at least 6 contact hours.

If you fit this category, and did not receive a card, please fill out this request form, and we will get one to you as soon as possible. If you did not have 6 contact hours during Spring Quarter, but would like to comment, please feel free to leave a comment on the same form - all comments from adjuncts will be gathered should testimony before the Labor Board be required.

CODAA and IEA Petition Illinois Labor Board !

We are on the threshold of tremendous change for adjunct faculty at the College. CODAA and IEA have filed a petition for representation election for all adjunct faculty with 6 or more academic contact hours.

The response to our call for organizing, has been tremendous:

  • We have determined that 1132 part-time academic workers were employed at COD this Spring quarter.
  • Of those, 520 seem qualified to vote on representation, as stated by the IELRB, as they fulfill the 6 academic contact hour requirement.
  • To date, we have had 258 positive responses to date, with still more coming in ...along with encouraging emails and letters, and even unsolicited contributions ( what a wonderful surprise - thank you !!! )
A brief summary of what will happen next, is below:
  1. The College will get courtesy letters
    • Howard Owens, head of Human Resources
    • Michael Murphy, President of COD
    • Mary Krantz, COD Board of Trustees president

  2. Tom Suhrbur's ( IEA ) observations:
    • There is a high trust factor for CODAA
    • CODAA has done its homework and laid a good foundation
    • There has been an overwhelming response for this action
    • Due to the above, we have a high level of credibility

  3. Election process to follow the petition:
    • Labor Board will respond to all interested parties - CODAA, COD
    • Details of a consent election will be worked out by CODAA/IEA-NEA and the college. This may be a fractious and cantankerous process.

  4. Who will be eligible to vote in the fall election remains to be settled ( 6- or 9-hour load bearers? )
The College of DuPage Courier has reported on the process so far. Read the article, and accept our repeated thanks - this could not have been accomplished without you !
