Help Preserve SURS !

Part-Timers,

It is imperative that we don't let Gov. B and the Illinois Assembly get their hands on SURS. The vast majority of you are already affected by the Social Security offsets which have yet to be repealed. Changes to SURS would negatively affect you even more.

Vicki Root-Wajda
From: Michelle Couturier, Region 32 UniServ Director

Please read the following e-mail message and attachment, and forward the information to other COD local members. Thank you.

-----Original Message-----
From: Donna L. Manering [mailto:manering@midwest.net]

As you know, the Governor has proposed changing the way that SURS must compute the interest rate in the Money Purchase Plan. This change would affect current SURS members. Last year nearly 60% of the retirees retire under the Money Purchase Plan rather than the 2.2% defined benefit plan.

Legislators have indicated to IEA's chief lobbyist, Rich Frankenfeld, that very few university/community college members have contacted them in opposition to this provision. We echoed SURS and told legislators that this change is probably unconstitutional in that it diminishes one's benefit.

Legislators need to hear from you right away. I have attached a postcard to be sent to legislators. Please forward to your members and ask them to send as many postcards as possible to legislators. To find area legislators and those serving on various committees, go to the ilga.gov website.

Thank you for your help.

CODAA Quarterly Meeting: Conversion Concerns for Adjuncts

As many of you may already know, the quarter-to-semester wage conversion will affect many of us financially. There might also be fewer sections in a semester-based course schedule, so some of us may see reductions in the total amount of classes that we can teach.

The College of DuPage Adjuncts Association invites all part-time instructors at the school to its quarterly meeting. The meeting takes place on Tuesday, February 22nd at 5 PM in IC Room 2063. Kathy Wessel, chief COD Trustee, will be there to answer questions. also, pizza will be served.

If you will be attending, please RSVP the CODAA mailbox in IC 2070 by Thursday, February 17th.

Change of Leadership

President Joanne Barsanti announced that she will be going into retirement status for the summer, but will be returning for fall quarter. Vice President Peter Consolazio has agreed to assume the presidency for the summer.

Updated Board Policies

Board Policies are being up-dated as the word "quarter" is being changed to the word "term". As members of Leadership Council, Joanne Barsanti and Peter Consolazio have the opportunity to review the policies before approval. CODAA has objected to any policy change that would lessen our present work load or benefits. None of these policies have been changed.

Recognition of Adjuncts

The recent controversy on the editorial pages of the Courier has brought attention to the lack of recognition for part-time faculty. We are anticipating improved recognition since Suzanne Vondruska has agreed to chair the Recognition Committee. Your input is needed. Suzanne can be contacted at .

Continuous Improvement

Two new CI (Continuous Improvement) teams are being formed at COD. CODAA has been asked to recommend part-time faculty members for the teams.

Two members are needed for the Career Development Team. The team charge is to investigate opportunities for career development at COD. The CI team will develop realistic, action oriented strategies for improvement of career development opportunities (internal and external) for college employees.

The anticipated benefits are increased overall satisfaction with careers at COD, improved employee perception of the overall institutional climate, and improved personal ownership of their own career development.

Volunteers please contact Joanne Barsanti, ext. 54089 or

V.P.E.C.

Valuing People through Enhanced Communications has a team charge to improve the satisfaction levels of employees by creating a culture where everyone accepts their responsibilities for decision making, is empowered to make decisions appropriate to their responsibilities, communicates effectively and obtains appropriate information to perform their duties. A CODAA board member was requested for this team. Sue Dreghorn has agreed to represent you.

Phi Theta Kappa -- Relay for Life Event

Phi Theta Kappa will be hosting the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Glen Ellyn/Wheaton here at the College on July 16 and 17. During the Relay, teams of people will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.

In addition to recruiting the teams we are also selling luminaries to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle to this horrible disease. These luminaries will be lit during a very emotional ceremony at dusk. For information on how you can start a team or purchase a luminary to raise money for this amazing cancer fighting event, call or email Shannon Hernandez in Student Activities at ext 3054.

If you are a cancer survivor and are unable to commit to being part of a team we would still like you to join us for the survivor lap as part of the opening ceremonies.

Dear COD Part Time Faculty Member:

You have been identified as a Part Time Faculty Member at the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, during the current school year. ASP Research has been chosen by the College of DuPage Adjuncts Association (CODAA) to survey the needs and desires of the part time faculty. CODAA is interested in your opinions concerning employment conditions at COD.

It is well documented that understanding working conditions, identifying areas that need improvement, and building faculty morale are important for successful teaching. Whether it is one class or ten that you are teaching, your input is important to us!

Please take a few moments to complete and return this short survey so CODAA can make your working experience a better one. Estimated completion time is less than seven minutes. CODAA President Diane Rzeszewski stresses the importance of everyone's participation.

Please return the survey by April 11, 2003, to be included in the results.

You can fax your responses to 815-795-6726, or mail them to CODAA Survey c/o ASP Research, P.O. Box 82, Morris, IL, 60450. You can also leave them in the CODAA mailbox in the part time faculty room at COD located in IC2070, or email them to ASP@mtco.com. Thank you for your help.

All information will be used exclusively for the purpose of conducting this survey, and will not be used or transferred in any other manner. If you are not teaching any classes in 2002-2003, please disregard this survey.

Cover the Uninsured Week

Cover the Uninsured Week is having a series of events nationally and in Chicago this week. Get the whole schedule from their website at http://covertheuninsuredweek.org/states/state.php?AreaID=4 for Chicago events. There are also events in Springfield and other states. Especially note the town hall meeting, with VIPs, Monday, 3/10, at noon-2 PM, Harold Washington Library. They have expressed special interest in hearing from contingent faculty.

SURS Mess

COCAL is attempting to gather information on how the State University Retirement System (SURS), which incudes most of us in the public sector, incuding cc's, is working for contingent. There seem to be problems.

Bob Lichtenbert has agreed to research this issue, but we need all on the list to send information on pst experiences so we can get the lay of the land preparatory to reporting the situation and then trying to improve it. Send info &/or the best contacts in your organization to Bob.

Your Retirement at Risk !

Due to some ill-conceived legislation, the meager pension that adjuncts receive is further reduced. Learn more about this deplorable situation, and what you can do to change it.

SSN #'s and E-Mail -- URGENT INFO ! READ NOW !

A number of adjuncts have been inquiring about union membership, status, etc., via e-mail. Some of you have included your Social Security Number in the e-mail.

Please be aware that you should NEVER put your SSN in an e-mail message - it's like putting it on a thousand postcards and then mailing these to a thousand random people !

E-mail, unless it's strongly encrypted, is not a secure medium and should never be used for confidential personal information. As it traverses from mail server to mail server enroute to the recipient, it can be easily opened and read by any number of people.

The incidence of identity theft is rapidly increasing these days, and technology helps the criminals to do it. Let's not make it any easier for them.

House Bill 1720 Passes In Senate !!!

We just got word today from Joe Berry of COCAL-Chicago, that House Bill 1720 has passed the Illinois Senate. It next goes to Governor Ryan, who is expected to sign it.

This is the culmination of four years of hard work by thousands of citizens around the state, and goes a long way toward overturning the most oppressive aspects of the despicable Harper decision, which effectively denied collective bargaining rights to Illinois college adjunct instructors. We were the ONLY state employees singled out for such a dubious honor.

This is an important victory not only for Illinois adjuncts, but for all Illinois citizens that are concerned about the future of higher education in the state. Adjuncts must be given better pay, benefits, health coverage, and pensions. Schools can no longer be allowed to subsidize all their other expenses on the backs of adjuncts. Today's victory shows that politicians recognize that we are an important constituency in higher education, and it is time that administrators face up to this fact as well.

Thanks to all of you for your help and support, and please spread the word about this good news. We are also grateful for the steadfast efforts of Senators Cronin and Dillard, co-sponsors of HB 1720 in the Senate, to pass this important legislation despite the strong resistance of entrenched anti-labor forces. More information will be posted on the CODAA Website when it becomes available.

Until then, let's celebrate !!!

2-22-02

Shape The Future !!

The actions we take or choose not to take, will determine whether the future of adjuncts at COD and Illinois is a bright one of opportunity and participation, or one of despair and continued disenfranchisement.

Here is the information you need to shape the future.

Spread the word ! Here is a printable page for adjuncts to print out, and here is a printable page for your friends and neighbors.

Here again, is general information about HB 1720.

Besides contacting Senators Cronin and Dillard, it's just as important to let your own Senator know that you want HB 1720 passed. Here is a great tool for finding your legislators !

Check here for a list of local ( DuPage ) Senators.

Referendum Info and Links

Passage of the referendum will bring us a significant pay increase as well as provide funds for much-needed programs and facility maintenance and upgrades. We need to encourage everyone we know to vote "Yes" on this important proposal on March 19th. We need the concerted efforts of all College of DuPage employees, and as many concerned citizens as we can recruit, to pass this critical referendum.

The school has expressed disappointment to us that so far, few adjuncts are helping to get out the vote on this issue. Again, it is directly in our best interests ( major pay increase ), to have this passed. If you can help with canvassing and / or phone calling, please e-mail Dr. Christopher Picard, Vice-President of Academic Affairs. He will forward your message to the volunteers committee. Thank you.
Here is a page with links to the school's Web information area regarding the referendum.

New Officers !

Below are the newly elected officers for CODAA, 2002. Let us also applaud our retiring president, Vicki Root, who has amazed everyone with her dedication to the plight of adjuncts at COD, her tireless efforts for recognition of CODAA by the school, her political savvy, and her tactful, diplomatic manner that was a major factor in winning a part-time union here. Vicki tells us that her main efforts as president emerita, will continue to be the passage of House Bill 1720 and negotiating with the school to expand the bargaining unit of the union to include more adjuncts. Way to go, Vicki !!

Delegations Needed to Visit Senators !

Donna Manering of the IEA has called upon adjuncts to form delegations to visit State Senators in the next two weeks to remind them to vote for passage of HB 1720. As you know, without this important legislation, we are all still encumbered by the infamous Harper decision, which deprives Illinois adjuncts of basic labor rights. Manering says that phone calls and letters are OK, but face-to-face visits are the key to maintaining their support.

It's up to you !!! Do you want to continue under the current system, or strike a blow for justice ?

Details on Alerts Page.

Legislation Pertinent to Adjuncts !

Besides HB 1720, there are a host of bills that aim to address inequities of the current system that exploits adjuncts. This is a good sign - it means the hard work and organization of thousands of adjuncts statewide ( and, beyond our borders, nationwide ), is having an effect ! The legislators are responding to US, the people ! WE are making an impact ! If you want some details on victories across the state and nation, we got 'em !

We must maintain the momentum, keep connected, stay informed, and contact our representatives.

The following page lists all pending legislation... http://www.uic-geo.org/cewlegislation.html

Well, OK, you've read about the legislation, now DO something about it ! Contact your local representatives ! Don't know who your legislator is ? Use this great tool for finding your legislators !

Volunteers Needed !

Our gains this past year - negotiations leading to tuition waivers / beefits package /pay increase, this Website, PIEC representation, and now, an adjunct union - were accomplished through hard work and persistence.

To become a truly cohesive organization that can effect even more impressive changes, we need volunteers. Specifically, CODAA needs committee chairpersons to help us move on a number of fronts.

Your assistance is needed and truly appreciated. Here is more information on how you can help.
